Georgia residency: taxes, bank accounts and what the status is worth
The easiest entry of any neighboring jurisdiction: unrestricted property purchase, low rates, fast registration. The grounds for residency, and where that simplicity stops.
Georgia occupies a special place on the list: almost everything here is processed faster and cheaper than with its neighbors. Which is exactly why it matters to understand what stands behind that simplicity, and what it does not deliver.
Grounds for residence
- Employment — under a contract with a local employer.
- Entrepreneurship — through a registered company with real activity and turnover.
- Real estate — ownership of property above a set value; the status is short-term and needs renewal.
- Study — for the duration of a program.
- Family reunification — with a spouse or close relatives who hold resident status.
- Permanent residency — after several years on a temporary status.
There is a separate feature worth flagging: citizens of many countries are allowed long visa-free entry. That's convenient, but it is not a status — you cannot build tax residency or a path to citizenship on it.
Taxes
Rates are low, and small businesses have access to special regimes with a reduced turnover-based tax. The key points worth checking:

- Territorial taxation for individuals: foreign-sourced income is taxed differently from local income. The wording matters — what counts as a foreign source is decided by where the activity takes place, not by what you'd prefer.
- Tax residency is triggered by days present in the country; there is also a separate regime for high-net-worth individuals with its own conditions.
- Double-tax treaties — check for your specific pair of countries, since they differ.
Banking
Accounts open comparatively easily, including for non-residents, but the requirements have grown stricter: proof of the source of funds, a demonstrated tie to the country, and sometimes a local phone number and address. International transfers work, and currency restrictions are minimal.
A practical caveat: account accessibility here has fluctuated historically, and banks have changed policy quickly. Keeping everything in one country is a poor idea regardless of how easy it was to open the account.
Citizenship
The path is long, with real requirements around length of residence, language, and knowledge of the country's history, and dual citizenship is treated cautiously — renouncing your prior citizenship is typically required, with exceptions granted only through a special process. That is why Georgia is best treated as a country for residence and tax status, not as a source of a second passport.
What to check
- Which ground applies to you, and what its renewal requires.
- How your specific income is taxed — local and foreign income are treated differently.
- How many days a year you'll actually spend in the country: both status and taxes hinge on it.
- Whether a treaty is in force with your previous country.
Bottom line
A cheap, fast entry and calm taxes, but a short horizon: citizenship is nearly out of reach, and banking access is inconsistent. A good first step, a weak sole solution. This piece is informational.
