Weekend trips from Dubai: Fujairah, Khor Fakkan and Saadiyat Island in one or two days

Sooner or later everyone who lives in Dubai wants a night somewhere else. The country is compact enough that ninety minutes to two hours at the wheel buys an entirely different landscape: mountains and the Indian Ocean to the east, or a museum island in Abu Dhabi. Here are three trips that fit into a weekend, with a note on how each place looks through a buyer’s eyes.

Khor Fakkan: tunnels, mountains and a bay

Khor Fakkan is a Sharjah enclave on the Gulf of Oman, and the drive is half the point. The highway from Sharjah cuts through the Hajar range in a chain of tunnels, and the desert gives way to rock. Stop at the Al Suhub Rest Area viewpoint before the descent — the whole bay is laid out below, best at sunset.

In town there is a beachfront corniche with boat trips along the coast, an amphitheatre set into the hillside and a waterfall at Shees Park a short drive inland. The water is clearer and cooler than off Jumeirah. Remember that Sharjah is dry — including hotels — and beach dress codes are stricter than in Dubai. For a quiet family weekend that is an advantage; otherwise, sleep in Fujairah.

Fujairah: the ocean, the oldest mosque and a train

Fujairah is the only emirate that faces the Indian Ocean entirely. Resort hotels line the coast north of the city, snorkellers head for Snoopy Island, and near the village of Bidiyah stands Al Bidiyah Mosque, widely regarded as the oldest surviving mosque in the country. Fujairah Fort and the mountain roads to the dams round out a day.

New for 2026 is the train: since late June, Etihad Rail has carried passengers between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah in about 1 hour 45 minutes. For a weekend it is still more of an experiment than a car replacement — you will need transport from the station to your hotel.

Saadiyat: a day of museums and beach in Abu Dhabi

The other option trades nature for culture. Saadiyat Island has become the region’s largest museum district: the Louvre Abu Dhabi, with its own children’s museum, now sits alongside the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum and teamLab Phenomena, and Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Abu Dhabi opens on 11 December 2026. A workable day: one museum in the morning (allow three to four hours for the Louvre), the beach after lunch, the waterfront in the evening. By car from Dubai, roughly an hour and a half depending on where you start.

What these trips tell a buyer
