Al Qudra Love Lakes: Two Hearts in the Desert

In the middle of Dubai’s desert, two interconnected lakes form the shape of giant hearts. As the city disappears behind the dunes and the evening light turns the water golden, Al Qudra Love Lakes offers a side of Dubai that feels far removed from towers, highways and crowded attractions.

Where Love Lakes are located

The man-made lakes are located within the wider Al Qudra and Al Marmoom desert area. Their distinctive heart-shaped design is immediately recognizable from above, while on the ground the landscape feels much more natural: water, desert vegetation, open sand and long walking paths surrounded by the quiet of the dunes.

The lakes attracted widespread attention after 2018, when Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, shared the location on Instagram. An aerial photograph later posted by KhalifaSat made the two enormous hearts even more recognizable. The design is unmistakably ambitious and unmistakably Dubai — an enormous symbol of love constructed in the middle of the desert.

Wildlife around Al Marmoom

Yet the experience on the ground is surprisingly peaceful. Walking trails weave around the water, while desert plants and carefully landscaped areas soften the surroundings. Birds frequently cross overhead, and the combination of water and vegetation has created an attractive habitat for wildlife.

The broader Al Marmoom landscape gives Love Lakes much of its character. The surrounding reserve contains more than 10 kilometres of lakes, areas of shrubland, fertile patches and open desert. This mixture supports birds, mammals, reptiles and native vegetation, giving visitors a chance to experience nature within relatively easy reach of the city.

One of Al Qudra’s most distinctive residents is the Patagonian mara, a long-legged animal that looks somewhat like an oversized rabbit. Gazelles and numerous bird species may also be spotted around the water.

Not just for couples

Despite its romantic name, Love Lakes is not exclusively a destination for couples. Families visit for picnics, photographers arrive during golden hour, cyclists pass through the extensive Al Qudra cycling routes, and nature enthusiasts come to observe wildlife.

The surrounding desert also offers opportunities for camping, barbecues, drives and evening gatherings, making the lakes part of a much broader outdoor destination rather than simply a photo location.

Best time to visit

Late afternoon is arguably the best time to visit. As the sun drops, the surface of the lakes begins reflecting warmer colours and the desert changes rapidly with the light. Visitors can walk around the shoreline, relax beneath the trees or simply watch the landscape transition from gold to pink and finally into the cooler blue tones of evening.

The appeal of Love Lakes ultimately lies in this contrast. The design itself is bold, artificial and highly recognizable, yet the surrounding experience is calm and surprisingly connected to nature.

Two enormous hearts carved into Dubai’s desert have become something more than a visual landmark — they are an accessible escape into one of the quieter landscapes surrounding the city.
