Schools in Dubai: help getting your child admitted

No. 1 for school admission help in Dubai for English-speaking families: an invited education consultant shortlists two or three schools by curriculum, KHDA rating and budget, checks for places in the right year group, assembles the documents and follows the application to enrolment. We then look for a home within reach of that school, not the other way round.

Find a school in Dubai

Your name and phone — we will check your child’s age, curriculum and moving date and tell you which schools are worth applying to.

The order matters more than any ranking. A family that rents first and looks for a school afterwards regularly ends up across the city: the morning rush turns 15 kilometres into 45 minutes, and a parent drives that road twice a day for years.

The work is led by an invited expert — an independent consultant on Dubai schooling, not a member of our staff. We choose the consultant for your child’s age and curriculum, introduce you and stay in touch until enrolment, then find a rental or a purchase close to the school.

In depth

The best family areas in Dubai, judged by the school run rather than the brochure

Dubai Hills, Sobha Hartland and Dubai Creek Harbour keep coming up, and for different reasons. What actually decides a family district, what each of the three is genuinely good at, and the trade every green master community asks you to make.

How does schooling in Dubai work for expat children?

Dubai’s public schools teach in Arabic and are meant for UAE nationals. Expat children go to private schools — there are more than two hundred in the emirate, and families choose them by curriculum first.

British curriculum

The most common in Dubai: GCSE and A-levels. The British early-years EYFS programme runs straight on into schools of this system.

American curriculum

High School Diploma, SAT and AP — for families looking at universities in the United States.

International Baccalaureate (IB)

Usually the most expensive segment. IB schools posted Dubai’s best results in the PISA 2025 study.

Indian and national curricula

Indian CBSE and ICSE form a large and noticeably cheaper segment. French, German and Russian schools number only a handful, and places there are sought early.

How do you choose a school in Dubai, and what does the KHDA rating show?

Dubai’s private schools are inspected by the KHDA, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority. The scale is the same for all: Outstanding, Very Good, Good, Acceptable, Weak. The reports are public and detailed.

A report shows more than the overall grade: which subjects the school is strong in, how it teaches children with special needs and how fast its teachers turn over. Two schools with the same fees can sit on different steps of the scale.

A new school has no rating: inspectors usually arrive in its second or third year. Until then parents judge it by brand, curriculum, teachers and how it fills its classes.

The overall level is high. In the PISA 2025 study Dubai’s private schools placed 6th in the world for reading (501 points) and 8th for maths (511) and science (522). The test covered 9,600 pupils from 168 schools.

How much does a school in Dubai cost?

A private school in Dubai costs from roughly AED 12,700 to AED 110,000+ a year per child, depending on the curriculum and the school. Senior years cost more than junior ones.

For the 2026/27 school year the regulator froze tuition: schools cannot charge more than the year before. In ordinary years increases are not arbitrary either — the KHDA ties them to the school’s rating.

On top of tuition come the registration fee, the entrance test, uniform, books, the bus, meals and trips. Two children at a mid-level school come to AED 8,000–12,000 a month, the second-largest item in a family budget after rent.

Is there a Russian-curriculum school in Dubai?

Yes. The Russian International School in Dubai is the only school in the UAE that consistently teaches the Russian federal curriculum. It has graduated more than five hundred pupils and gives a route into Russian universities without re-sitting exams.

The second is the Russian School of Abu Dhabi in Al Bateen, a partner of the Primakov gymnasium in Moscow. Teaching is trilingual — Russian, English and Arabic — from pre-school to Grade 11.

Abu Dhabi and Dubai are about 130 kilometres and an hour and a half apart, so choosing a Russian-curriculum school effectively chooses the city the family lives in.

National curriculum or international: which should you choose?

The choice is about trajectory, not quality. A national curriculum keeps the home-country certificate and a direct route into its universities. An international one opens Western universities and full immersion in English, but switching back afterwards is hard.

The child’s age decides it. In primary school a switch between systems goes smoothly; in the senior years it almost always costs a year — the most common and most expensive mistake of a family move.

Recognition of the certificate is checked when choosing the school, not a year before university: is it recognised where the child may study next, is a recognition procedure needed, and which exams the chosen programme requires.

When should you apply, and why does the school come before the district?

Apply in parallel with the home search, not after the move. Strong schools in popular family districts routinely keep waiting lists for some year groups, and that limit is tighter than the housing budget.

The order is two or three schools first, then the map, then the property. Test the drive at 7:30 in the morning, not on a Sunday navigator. Salik toll gates twice a day add several hundred dirhams a month.

The school bus changes the geography: many schools carry children from neighbouring districts, which sometimes removes the need to live in the most expensive cluster. Check the route before signing a lease or a purchase.

Commit to a home once enrolment is confirmed. The reverse order regularly ends in a lease on the far side of the city or a second move.

Which documents does a Dubai school ask for?

A school asks for the pupil’s file, school reports and medical certificates, and sometimes an entrance test. Papers from the country you are leaving need translation and an apostille or legalisation.

Legalisation happens in the country that issued the document, so it is done before the move: arranging it from Dubai is hard. Birth and marriage certificates are needed again for the family’s residence visas.

A child’s residency hangs on the sponsoring parent’s visa, and for a tenant on a registered Ejari contract: without it you cannot sponsor a family visa. So the sponsor’s status and the address are sorted in the first weeks, alongside the school application.

Which new schools open in Dubai in 2026/27?

According to the KHDA, 26 new private education providers open in Dubai in the 2026/27 school year, including seven schools with 16,846 places: four British-curriculum and three IB.

Among them are the Dubai campuses of Harrow on Hessa Street, Rugby School in Nad Al Sheba and Queen Elizabeth’s School in Dubai Sports City. New schools have no KHDA rating yet: inspection comes in the second or third year.

Go by schools that have opened, not by announcements: campus opening dates depend on KHDA approval.

What if your child is too young for school?

In Dubai a child under four can only attend a nursery licensed by the KHDA. There are more than two hundred nurseries in the emirate: Montessori, British EYFS, Reggio-inspired and bilingual groups.

A full day costs AED 2,500–8,000 a month. Since 23 March 2026 a nursery may ask for a registration deposit only after making a formal offer of a place that the parent has accepted.

A nursery sets the morning route for a couple of years, a school for ten. A family with a child under three is wiser to settle a nursery near home first than to pick a flat for a school the child will not start for years.

How the work runs

The work runs in five steps: from the child’s age and plans to the keys of a home near the school.

  1. 1

    Brief

Your child’s age and year group, current curriculum, language, university plans, the budget for school and housing, and the moving date.

  2. 2

    Short list

The consultant selects two or three schools by curriculum, KHDA report, fees and places in the right year group.

  3. 3

    Documents and application

A document list for each school, translation and legalisation before departure, applications and preparation for the entrance test.

  4. 4

    Enrolment

A confirmed place, the school contract, the school bus and the route — all before a housing contract is signed.

  5. 5

    A home nearby

A rental or a purchase within reach of the school, with the rush-hour drive tested, Ejari registered and family visas in hand.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a school in Dubai cost in 2026?

From roughly AED 12,700 to AED 110,000+ a year per child. Tuition for 2026/27 is frozen at last year’s level; registration, uniform, the bus and meals come on top.

When should you apply to a school in Dubai?

In parallel with the home search, before the move. Strong schools in popular family districts keep waiting lists for some year groups, and places are allocated in advance.

Is there a school in Dubai with a Russian certificate?

Yes, the Russian International School in Dubai teaches the Russian federal curriculum. In Abu Dhabi the Russian School in Al Bateen partners with the Primakov gymnasium in Moscow.

Which comes first — the school or the flat?

The school. Places at strong schools are limited, and parents drive to them twice a day for years. The home is chosen within reach of the school once enrolment is confirmed.

Does a child need a residence visa to enrol?

Enrolment follows the family’s status: the child gets a visa through the sponsoring parent. If the family rents, a registered Ejari contract comes first.
