China: work, status, and why it is not a route to a second passport

China appears in relocation conversations mainly through business, and the status picture there is straightforward once two facts are established.

The two facts

China does not recognise dual nationality. Acquiring another citizenship voluntarily results in the loss of Chinese nationality, and a foreign national acquiring Chinese nationality is expected to renounce.

Permanent residence is rare. The permanent residence card — informally the Chinese green card — is issued in small numbers relative to the foreign population, on narrow grounds: senior investment, high-level talent, senior positions in designated organisations, and family reunification with Chinese citizens or permanent residents.

What is actually available

• Work permits in a tiered classification, with the top tier attracting faster processing and better terms.
• Business and investment visas tied to an operating enterprise.
• Family visas for relatives of Chinese citizens and permanent residents.
• Study visas, with limited conversion into work status.
• Regional schemes in specific free trade zones and cities offering faster routes for qualifying talent.

Property

Foreigners may generally buy residential property for their own use, subject to conditions including a period of prior residence or work in the country and, in most cities, a limit of one property. Land itself is not owned in China at all: what is transferred is a long-term land use right, with residential rights granted for a defined term and renewal treated in legislation.

That last point is worth restating in a section about status: even for a Chinese citizen, the underlying tenure is a term right rather than freehold. A foreign buyer is not being treated differently; the system is simply different.

The practical position

For someone doing business in China, the visa system works and the country is navigable. For someone assessing jurisdictions for a second base, a second status or a second passport, China does not participate in that market and does not intend to. It belongs in the comparison only to be removed from it.
