A second passport for a child: age, documents and what transmits

Children acquire nationality on different rules from adults, and several entitlements have windows that close. What is done before eighteen determines what is possible afterwards.

How a child acquires it

• By descent at birth, automatically or on registration, from either parent in most modern systems.
• By birth on the territory, where the country applies that rule.
• Derivatively, when a parent naturalises — usually for minors, frequently on application rather than automatically.
• Included in an investment programme application as a dependant.

The windows that close

• Registration of a birth abroad, required within a period in several countries, after which the process becomes harder or the entitlement lapses.
• Derivative acquisition on a parent's naturalisation, available only while the child is a minor in most systems.
• Dependant status in a programme, which ends at a defined age.
• Choice requirements. Countries that do not permit dual nationality frequently require a person who acquired two at birth to choose at a defined age, and failing to choose has a default.

What comes with it

• Transmission onwards. Whether your grandchildren will inherit the nationality depends on generational limits, and a citizenship acquired by descent sometimes cannot be passed on again.
• Obligations at majority — military service and, for one nationality, tax filing.
• Education rights, including domestic university fees, which is frequently the largest financial consequence.
• Travel document rules requiring a child to use a particular passport at a particular border.

The instruction for parents

Map every nationality each child is entitled to, from both parents and from place of birth, with the registration deadlines. Do it in the first year of the child's life rather than the eighteenth. The entitlements are free; the windows are not reopened.
