Family reunification: the most underrated route to status

It is not sold, so it is not marketed, so most people planning a move never consider it. In several countries it is faster and cheaper than everything that is.

Family reunification: the most underrated route to status

Family reunification is the largest single route to residence in most developed countries and the one least discussed in conversations about relocation. The reason is commercial: nobody sells it, so nobody markets it.

What it covers

  • Joining a spouse who is a citizen or a resident of the country.
  • Joining a parent, for minor children and in some systems for adult dependants.
  • Parents joining an adult child, on conditions that vary from generous to nearly impossible.
  • EU-specific rules under free movement: the non-EU family of an EU citizen exercising free movement rights has derived rights that are stronger and faster than any national immigration route would give them.

Why it is faster

Because it rests on a relationship rather than on a quota or a points score. There is no competition for places, no annual limit in most systems, and the assessment is documentary rather than discretionary. Where the relationship is genuine and evidenced, the outcome is largely predictable — which is not true of any investment or skilled route.

The conditions

  • Income and accommodation requirements on the sponsor, which have been raised in several countries and are the most common obstacle.
  • Language requirements for the arriving spouse in some systems, before arrival.
  • Genuineness assessment — interviews, evidence of the relationship's history, and in some countries scrutiny that is intrusive by design.
  • Waiting periods before a sponsor may sponsor, particularly where the sponsor themselves arrived recently.

The strategic point

In a family where one member has a stronger claim than the others — an EU nationality by descent, a qualifying skill, a Brazilian or Mexican child — the efficient plan is frequently to establish that person's status first and bring the family through reunification, rather than each member pursuing a route of their own.
