Where residence is genuinely easiest to obtain

"Where is residence easiest?" is asked constantly and answered badly, because easy conflates four separate things.

Easiest to qualify for

Countries with low or no financial threshold and broad grounds: much of Latin America on solvency or rentier income, Georgia and Armenia on straightforward terms, Albania, Serbia and Montenegro through property or a company, and Thailand and the Philippines on deposit-based retirement routes. The requirement is modest and the assessment is documentary.

Easiest to process

Countries with fast administration and low backlogs: the Gulf states, where a property or company visa completes in weeks; Georgia, where registration is a day; and several Caribbean and Pacific programmes where the timeline is months. Slowest, consistently, are the European systems with quotas and the large immigration countries with queues.

Easiest to maintain

Countries with no or minimal presence requirement: several European golden visa permits require only days a year, and Gulf property-linked visas are generous on absence. Hardest to maintain are permits that require genuine residence — which is most of the ones that lead somewhere.

Easiest to convert into something permanent

The inverse of the above. Countries with short naturalisation periods and real residence requirements: parts of Latin America, and several European systems for people who actually live there. The permits that are easiest to hold from a distance are almost always the ones that convert into nothing.

The trade, stated plainly

Ease of acquisition and value of outcome are inversely related, consistently, across every jurisdiction. A permit that asks nothing gives nothing beyond itself. A status that leads to permanence and a passport asks for years of your actual life.

So the useful question is not where residence is easiest but which of the four kinds of ease you need. Someone who wants a base and a tax position needs the first three. Someone who wants a passport for their children needs the fourth, and should stop reading comparisons of the first three.
