What a residence permit does not protect you from
Holding residence changes a great deal and leaves several things exactly as they were. The gap between those two lists is where people are surprised.
A residence permit changes a great deal about daily life and leaves several things exactly as they were. The gap between what people assume it covers and what it actually does is where most of the disappointment in this subject lives.
It does not settle your tax position
The most consequential item on the list. Residence is an immigration status; tax residence is decided separately, by each country's own rules, and the country you left applies its test regardless of what permit you hold. A permit is evidence in that conversation, not the answer to it.
It does not lead to citizenship
No length of residence produces a right to apply. Emirati citizenship is granted by exception. Anyone presenting a visa as a passport on a delay is describing a system that does not exist.

It is not permanent
It renews, on conditions, under whatever rules are in force at renewal. A ten-year term is a long lease on a status, not ownership of one.
It does not protect the asset that produced it
Nor does the asset protect the permit. They are linked in one direction only: the property supports the visa, and selling the property removes the basis. Losing the visa does not touch the title.
It gives no rights anywhere else
A UAE residence permit is a UAE document. It does not affect visa requirements for other countries, does not shorten a Schengen count, and confers nothing in Europe, the United States or the United Kingdom.
It does not exempt you from the law you brought with you
- Reporting obligations in your country of citizenship continue where they apply — foreign account reporting, controlled company rules, declarations of second citizenship where required.
- One country in the world taxes on citizenship, and moving does not change that for its citizens.
- Inheritance exposure can persist through domicile or long residence long after income tax exposure has ended.
It does not create a safety net
There is no unemployment benefit, no state pension accruing to a foreign resident, and healthcare is the insurance you bought rather than a public system. That is not a criticism — it is the arrangement, and it is priced into the absence of income tax. It simply has to be in a plan that is meant to last, particularly one that includes ageing.
What it does give
A legal basis to live in the country, banking as a resident, the ability to sponsor your family, a licence, a school place, a lease in your own name, and a base in a jurisdiction with no personal income tax. That is a substantial list. It is simply a different list from the one people arrive expecting.
