Dubai nurseries in 2026: programmes, the KHDA licence and what a place actually costs

A child under four in Dubai can only be enrolled at a nursery that holds a KHDA licence — the same regulator that rates schools also rates early-years providers. An unlicensed home-based group is not formally permitted to care for children this age, and the first question when choosing a nursery is not the programme or the price, but whether the licence exists at all.

The emirate has more than 200 nurseries, and supply splits by programme, not just by price.

The main programmes

Three approaches come up most often. Montessori emphasises independence and self-paced work with materials, usually from around 18 months. British EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) is a structured curriculum that feeds directly into British schools at F1/F2, which is why families targeting a specific school chain pick it. Reggio Emilia favours free play and project work — less structure, more open-ended creative activity. Alongside these, the city has Italian, American and Russian-language nurseries running a full or partial curriculum in Russian.

Intake age varies: some nurseries take babies from 1.5–3 months (full infant care), others start only at 2–3 years, closer to school preparation.

What it costs

Full-day monthly fees (typically 8am to 2–3pm, more with after-care) run AED 2,500–8,000; annually, AED 12,000–60,000-plus per child. Three things drive the range: district, programme and the child's age (infant care costs more than a 3–4-year-old group). Rough benchmarks by segment:

On top of that, nearly all nurseries charge a one-off registration fee of roughly AED 2,000, plus uniform, meal and outing fees — worth confirming separately, since advertised prices do not always include them.

Before you pay a deposit

Since 23 March 2026 an updated KHDA fee and refund policy applies: a nursery may only request a registration deposit after it has made a formal offer of a place and the parent has accepted it — a "just in case" prepayment to hold a place without a confirmed offer no longer meets the regulator's rules. Second, check the KHDA rating of the specific branch, not just the brand overall — ratings differ between branches of the same chain — and the rating is public. Third, ask directly about the staff-to-child ratio in the infant room, which is tightly regulated in Dubai, rather than taking "small groups" as a given.

The logic mirrors schools: a nursery sets the morning run for a couple of years, a school for ten. A family with a child under three does better settling the nursery question within walking distance first, rather than choosing an apartment around a school the child will not attend for years.
