American schools in Dubai
The American curriculum is built around English, public speaking, maths, history and geography — and around a great deal of extracurricular activity. The aim is to find and develop a child’s talents, strengthen communication and give them creative freedom. Of Dubai’s three most popular systems it is considered the most relaxed: knowledge matters, but without the rigour of a British school.
At the end, pupils receive an American High School Diploma. Some schools let pupils choose the IB Diploma for the last two years, which is recognised more widely. The early years last three years — Pre-KG, KG1 and KG2 — followed by Grade 1 to Grade 12. American schools have no week-long mid-term break, so their year finishes earlier, in mid-June.

1. American School of Dubai (ASD)
One of the oldest schools in the city. Getting in without an American or Canadian passport is hard: admission runs in five priority tiers. US and Canadian citizens come first; second, siblings of pupils holding those passports; third, siblings of pupils with other passports; fourth, citizens of Latin American countries; and only fifth, everyone else.

2. GEMS Dubai American Academy (DAA)
The only American school in Dubai with KHDA’s top grade, held since 2011. Strong emphasis on technology — robotics, artificial intelligence — as well as physical development and communication.

3. Dunecrest American School
A school built around all-round development: creative thinking, communication, emotional wellbeing, a global outlook. The approach is to find what a child is good at and passionate about, and build on it. Parents note that there are few Russian-speaking children here, and that helping shy children settle in is one of its strengths.

Who an American school suits
- A child who needs a gentle transition and who is better drawn out than drilled.
- A family planning for university in the US or Canada.
- A child with strong creative or sporting interests.
An honest caveat from parent reviews: families arriving from academically demanding school systems often find the workload in an American school too light, especially in maths. If that matters to you, look at schools with the IB Diploma in the final years or at British schools. The systems are compared side by side in British, American or IB.
