What a private school in Dubai really costs
School is one of the largest lines in a family budget in Dubai, and for a family with two children it is often comparable to the rent on a good flat. So it deserves the same care: not “roughly this much”, but worked out for a specific school, year group and payment plan.
The order of magnitude
Fees depend on the school and on the child’s age: the older the year group, the higher the fee. On the 2023/24 tariffs, the city’s strong schools charged from roughly AED 38,000–45,000 a year for the foundation stage up to AED 90,000–115,000 for the final year. Some reference points from the same year:
- Dubai English Speaking School/College — from AED 38,305 (FS1) to AED 79,222 (Year 13);
- Hartland International — from AED 42,230 to AED 80,340;
- King’s Al Barsha — from AED 53,622 to AED 97,798;
- Dubai American Academy — from AED 63,026 to AED 88,848;
- North London Collegiate School — from AED 72,070 to AED 115,617.

Entry fees
On top of the annual fee there are one-off payments. The registration fee on application is AED 525, non-refundable. The deposit on accepting an offer is usually 10% of the annual fee and is credited against tuition. A few schools also charge a separate one-off fee on entry: in 2023/24 that was, for example, AED 20,500 at Dubai College and a capital fee of AED 22,000 at the American School of Dubai.
How fees are paid
At most private schools fees are paid by term — three instalments a year on the school’s schedule — or for the whole year at once. Some schools accept monthly payments. A few give a discount for paying the full year in advance.
Where to find a discount
Discounts exist at Dubai schools, but they are not advertised — you have to ask. The main kinds:
- Sibling discount — for the second, third and subsequent children. The size, and which child it starts from, varies by school: from 5% for the second child to 25–50% for the fourth or fifth.
- Early bird — for paying the year’s fee early, usually 3–7%.
- Founders’ discount — offered by new schools in their first years, up to 25%.
- Corporate discount — if your employer, or the nursery your child is coming from, has an agreement with the school.
- Bank discount — in 2023/24, for instance, several GEMS schools gave 4.25% for paying the year with a card from one of the local banks.
Put together everything your family qualifies for and you can sometimes take 15–20% off the fee. That is considerably more than you are usually able to negotiate off a rent.
What the fee does not cover
Meals, the school bus, uniform, paid clubs, trips and, at some schools, a personal iPad and extra English support. Together that adds several thousand dirhams a year per child. Details are in the school day and costs on top of fees.
