British Fintech Revolut Gets Approval From the UAE’s Central Bank

The UAE’s central bank has granted payment approvals to Revolut, and the service — with over 75 million users worldwide — is preparing to launch locally. Here’s what that changes for a foreign owner of a UAE apartment.

British Fintech Revolut Gets Approval From the UAE’s Central Bank

The UAE's financial regulator has granted payment approvals to the well-known digital bank Revolut. A local launch is now being prepared.

The promised line-up

Once launched, users will get access to accounts in multiple currencies, physical and digital cards, and transfers within the UAE and abroad, all from the mobile app.

The company itself was founded in London a decade ago and today serves more than seventy-five million people across various countries. The head of its Gulf regional division called the UAE's financial market one of the most advanced in the world, and described securing the approvals as confirmation of its readiness to operate under strict local supervision.

Why this matters to an apartment owner

The most routine, most frequent headache for a foreign owner here isn't the purchase itself — it's the money movement around it: another instalment payment from abroad, rental income coming in, service charge payments going out, proceeds after a sale going out again.

Every newly licensed player with low-cost transfers and a multi-currency account widens the choice on that front — especially for anyone who doesn't yet have a full resident account at a local bank.

What not to expect

A digital wallet doesn't replace a traditional bank where one is actually required by the transaction itself: a mortgage, payments into a developer's protected escrow account, and large transactions requiring proof of source of funds still go through traditional institutions with full client verification.

And one more thing: a regulator's approval means the right to operate, not the fact of launch. The actual service list and pricing will only be known once operations actually begin in the country.
