UAE oil spill: beaches closed in three emirates as oil reaches Al Marjan Island
Between 23 and 28 October 2026, a tanker oil spill closed the beaches of Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Sharjah. Oil has reached about 30 km of coastline, from Umm Al Quwain to Al Marjan Island. No closure of Dubai beaches has been announced, and no reopening date has been given in the north.
Beaches in three northern UAE emirates — Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Sharjah — are closed because of a tanker oil spill. Umm Al Quwain closed first, on 23 October 2026, and Sharjah last, on 28 October. Oil has reached about 30 km of coastline, as far as Al Marjan Island.
What happened?
On Friday, 23 October, the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment said its monitoring system had detected an oil spill from a tanker affecting Umm Al Quwain’s beaches. The ministry did not name the vessel.
According to international maritime agencies, it is a 330-metre tanker damaged at sea on 9–10 October. Its crew of 22 sailors was rescued.

Which beaches are closed?
| Emirate | Date | What is closed |
|---|---|---|
| Umm Al Quwain | 23 October | beaches and coastal areas, temporarily |
| Ras Al Khaimah | 24 October | all beaches, “until further notice” |
| Sharjah | 28 October | all beaches, temporarily, as a precaution |
None of the three emirates has given a reopening date. Fishermen and boat owners have been told to avoid fishing in the affected areas.
How far has the oil spread?
About 30 km of coastline, from Umm Al Quwain to Al Marjan Island in Ras Al Khaimah. Possible traces have been reported along up to 75 km, as far as northern Ras Al Khaimah.
Cordons are up along the shore, and clean-up and coastal surveys are under way. Local and federal teams are on the job, and Sharjah has sent specialist crews to keep the oil off its beaches.
Is the smell dangerous?
According to the ministry, no. The odour residents noticed in several emirates poses no health risk, and the beach closures are described as a precaution.
Environmental groups warn about something else: the Gulf is semi-enclosed, so its water renews slowly. Oil residue may stay in seabed sediments after the visible slick is removed.
Are Dubai beaches closed?
No. As of 29–30 October 2026, no beach closures had been announced in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Ajman or Fujairah. All closures concern the three northern emirates.

What does it mean for buyers on Al Marjan?
The island is Ras Al Khaimah’s main resort build-out: branded residences and hotels are going up around the Wynn casino, whose opening has moved to September 2027. While the beaches are shut, the resort side of the island loses the main reason people go there.
A temporary beach closure does not directly affect deals on apartments due in 2027–2028. Owners already letting finished seafront homes on short stays should, however, expect a gap in their booking calendar.

What to watch next?
Three things: when the emirates set a reopening date, what the seabed surveys off Al Marjan show, and whether the slick drifts further south. That decides whether the spill stays a one-season episode or becomes a factor in coastal prices.
