The black-and-red bedroom: why a villa has a room nobody sleeps in

· Oleg Svyatenko, RERA broker

A black-and-red bedroom is not designed for sleep. Red is a restless colour, and against black it creates a charged, theatrical room made for a couple’s evenings and for mood. Afterwards the owners go to a separate, calm bedroom to rest — which is one reason a good villa has several bedrooms.

Why is red called a restless colour?

Because it draws the eye more actively than other colours, stirs people up and raises the emotional temperature. Our designer’s first reaction to the request was professional and honest: red is restless — not slightly, but restless altogether.

A black-and-red bedroom is one of those briefs after which an interior designer wants to ask the client to repeat it. Red with black sounds striking, but it sits badly with the idea of a room where a person falls asleep and recovers.

That pull on the eye is exactly why red is so loved in advertising, in signage and in accents that must catch attention instantly.

What happens when red is paired with black?

The effect grows stronger. Black absorbs light and makes a room deep and intimate, and against it red begins, quite literally, to burn. The result is an expressive, almost theatrical setting.

For a bar, a cigar room or a home cinema such a scheme can be appropriate. For a room where people need to sleep it is doubtful.

And yet the designer admits that working on the project turned out to be thrillingly interesting, because behind the unusual request stood a perfectly clear logic.

What is a black-and-red bedroom actually made for?

For something other than sleep. The key to the story is the purpose of the room. We are, after all, in the Emirates, so the designer speaks delicately in the clip, by hint: such bedrooms are used for other purposes.

It is a space for a couple, for mood and for special evenings. Calm is not required here. Atmosphere is, and restless red works precisely towards that task.

The most telling part is what happens next. After such a room the owners either go off to separate bedrooms or go together to their own one, where they genuinely rest.

The black-and-red bedroom does not replace an ordinary bedroom. It exists beside it as a separate scenario. Seen that way, the palette stops looking strange: it is not an error of taste but an exact match to the function of the room.

Why does a villa need several bedrooms?

Because when the floor area allows it, each room takes on a role of its own. The story explains well why premium villas and penthouses in Dubai have so many bedrooms.

The usual explanation — guests, children, household staff — is true but not complete. Somewhere people sleep, somewhere they spend an evening together, somewhere they rest during the day or work.

Each role gets its own colour. One palette cannot excite and soothe at the same time, so it is more sensible to separate those scenarios into different rooms than to attempt one universal room that ends up handling none of them.

For owners this is also a question of layout. If the house provides rooms for different scenarios from the start, the interior of each can be bolder and more exact, with no fear that a vivid scheme will get in the way of rest.

What should a bedroom for real sleep look like?

The rules are the opposite. In the designer’s words, the interior of a sleeping room needs particular colours, a particular depth of colour and a particular lightness, so that a person truly relaxes. In practice that means five things.

Palette: calm, muted shades with no sharp contrasts. The eye should not catch on bright patches while a person is getting ready for sleep.

Depth of tone: a room that is too light and cold feels sterile, and one that is too dark and saturated feels oppressive. The balance to find is a space that wraps around you without weighing on you.

Lightness: it matters how a colour looks in different light — by day under the Dubai sun and in the evening under warm, diffused lamps. One and the same shade can read entirely differently in those two conditions.

Light: soft evening lighting scenes, and the ability to black the room out completely at night. That matters especially with large windows and panoramic glazing.

Textiles and textures: calm materials that support the palette and do not argue with it.

How should an unusual request be handled in your own project?

By reading it before arguing with it. The main lesson of the case goes beyond bedrooms: an unusual request is not always a mistake the designer must talk the client out of. Often it is a task that needs to be understood correctly.

Before debating colour, find out what exactly will happen in the room, how often it will be used and at what time of day.

Function first, colour second. The palette is chosen for the scenario and not for a picture from a magazine.

Separate opposite tasks. Rest and emotion are better designed in different rooms.

Check colour in real light. Samples should be looked at in the room itself, by day and in the evening.

Think about resale. Bold decisions are easier to make in areas that can be redecorated without touching the main bedroom.

The takeaway

A black-and-red bedroom seems strange only for as long as it is imagined as a place to sleep. In fact it is a room with a different function, and restless red works there for the atmosphere.

The owners rest in bedrooms where colour, depth of tone and lightness have been chosen for relaxation. That is why a good villa has several bedrooms, each with a character of its own.

Frequently asked

Can you sleep in a black-and-red bedroom?

You can, but relaxing in it is harder. Red is an active colour, and with black it creates a tense, emotional atmosphere. A calm palette suits everyday sleep better.

Which colours should be chosen for a bedroom people sleep in?

Muted shades without sharp contrasts, with a considered depth of tone and lightness. The exact choice depends on the lighting, the size of the room and the owners’ taste, so samples should be checked on site.

Does a separate room for mood make sense?

If the floor area allows, yes. It makes an expressive interior possible without compromise and keeps the main bedroom calm.

Will a vivid bedroom get in the way when the villa is sold?

Buyers of premium property usually judge the layout and the quality of execution, and the decoration of one room can be changed. It is still wiser to keep the main bedroom in a neutral palette.
