ADNOC, OpenAI and G42: the first energy company on OpenAI Frontier — and three more Abu Dhabi AI deals
On 2 November 2026, at ADIPEC, ADNOC signed a multi-year deal with OpenAI and G42 and became the first energy company on OpenAI Frontier, a platform for AI agents. Abu Dhabi signed three more OpenAI agreements that day: government services, Mubadala and a five-year AI rollout.
On 2 November 2026, ADNOC signed a multi-year partnership with OpenAI and G42 and became the first energy company to deploy OpenAI Frontier, a platform that runs AI agents across a company's operations. The deal was signed at ADIPEC in Abu Dhabi and witnessed by Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.
What did ADNOC, OpenAI and G42 sign?
The three companies will jointly build a decision-intelligence system that pairs OpenAI's latest models with ADNOC's proprietary industrial data. The aim is to connect operational, capital and commercial decisions that used to be taken separately.
The deal was presented by Dr Sultan Al Jaber, ADNOC's group CEO and UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Sam Altman for OpenAI and Mansoor Al Mansoori, CEO of G42 International. G42 takes part through its subsidiary Inception42.

What is OpenAI Frontier?
OpenAI's enterprise platform for building, deploying and managing AI agents, launched on 5 February 2026. Early adopters include HP, Intuit, Oracle, State Farm, Thermo Fisher and Uber. ADNOC is the first from the energy sector.
What will ADNOC use the AI for?
Two applications come first:
- Field master planning. One integrated study replaces separate subsurface, facilities and economic studies, drawing on data from thousands of wells and hundreds of surface facilities. The whole field is optimised at once.
- Barrel valuation across the value chain. AI agents forecast supply, demand, prices and margins, linking production, processing, refining, logistics, sales and trading.
ADNOC also gets access to OpenAI's Daybreak Blue cybersecurity initiative for critical energy infrastructure, and its workforce will be trained on the new tools.
Where does the data stay, and who decides?
The system runs on G42's sovereign AI infrastructure inside the UAE. All solutions stay under ADNOC's control, and humans keep oversight of high-stakes decisions.
How much does ADNOC already use AI?
ChatGPT Enterprise is rolled out to more than 40,000 ADNOC employees — the largest enterprise deployment in the Middle East and North Africa, with adoption above 97%. Its strategy counts more than 200 AI applications and 70 robotics use cases, deployed or in development.
The AI work is not new: in 2019 ADNOC and G42 set up the AIQ joint venture, 60% owned by ADNOC and 40% by G42.
Which other deals did Abu Dhabi sign with OpenAI?
The ADNOC deal is one of four signed the same day:
| Area | Parties | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Energy | ADNOC, OpenAI, G42 | OpenAI Frontier across ADNOC's operations |
| Government | Abu Dhabi government, OpenAI | Machine-readable policies and regulations for permits and certificates |
| Investment | Mubadala, Inception42, OpenAI | AI in investment analysis, deal sourcing and risk assessment |
| AI adoption | Inception42, OpenAI | Five-year agreement covering government, business and education |
The government project's first pilot runs with the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority on food imports. Officials keep the final say.
What does it mean for Abu Dhabi?
The emirate keeps drawing the biggest AI players. Stargate UAE, announced in May 2025, is a 1-gigawatt cluster inside the 5-gigawatt UAE-US AI Campus, with the first 200 megawatts due online in 2026.
How big capital arriving at ADGM feeds into housing nearby is covered in Capital Group's ADGM licence and Temasek's Abu Dhabi office. Dubai's own AI bet is in Dubai AI Campus: 1,000 AI companies by 2030.
