Russian-curriculum schools in Dubai and Abu Dhabi: the two schools that teach the Russian programme and issue a Russian certificate

Families searching for a Russian school in Dubai are usually moving with children and do not want to lose the Russian school-leaving certificate — either because a return is possible, or because the child is already in the senior years and it is too late to switch programmes. There are only a few schools in the UAE teaching the full Russian curriculum, and it pays to know about them before choosing a district rather than after.

The Russian International School in Dubai

The only school in the UAE that consistently delivers the Russian federal general education curriculum. Teaching follows Russian standards, and the school has more than five hundred students — far from all of them Russian citizens. The programme allows graduates to go on to a Russian university without retaking exams or adapting.

The Russian School of Abu Dhabi

The first school in the Emirates to teach in Russian in line with Russia's federal state educational standards. It operates as a partner of the Primakov Gymnasium in Moscow, is located in the Al Bateen district of Abu Dhabi, and takes children from pre-school through to eleventh grade.

Teaching is trilingual: Russian, English and Arabic. The school combines Russian standards with the requirements of Abu Dhabi's Department of Education and Knowledge — so the certificate is Russian, but local regulation is complied with.

How this differs from an international school

Most schools in the UAE follow the British, American, Indian or International Baccalaureate curriculum. Choosing between them and a Russian school is a choice not of quality but of trajectory.

• The Russian curriculum keeps the Russian certificate and a direct route into a Russian university, removes the question of re-assessment on return, and does not break a child's schooling midway.
• An international curriculum opens the way to Western universities and gives full immersion in English, but moving back into the Russian system afterwards is difficult.

A practical point: in the senior years, switching between systems almost always costs a year. In primary school the switch is painless. The child's age at the time of the move weighs on the decision more than any ranking.

Fees and what is happening to them

Private schools in Dubai cost from roughly AED 12,700 to AED 110,000+ a year, depending on the curriculum and the school. For the 2026/27 academic year the regulator has frozen tuition fees: schools cannot raise their fees above the previous year's. For a family with two children that is a saving worth building into the relocation budget.

On top of tuition come the registration fee, uniform, textbooks, the school bus and extracurricular activities — which together add a noticeable share to the annual bill.

What matters most when choosing property

There are only a couple of Russian-curriculum schools in the UAE, and that turns the usual logic of house-hunting around. Normally a family chooses a district and then a school nearby. Here it is the reverse: the school is fixed, and the district is chosen around it.

• Count the journey, not the distance. The Dubai morning rush hour turns 15 kilometres into 45 minutes. Test the route at 7:30, not at noon.
• The school bus changes the map. If the school runs buses to particular districts, the list of suitable addresses grows — but confirm the route before you sign a lease or a purchase contract.
• Salik on the school run. Two toll gates twice a day add up to several hundred dirhams a month, and they are rarely included in a district's budget.
• Abu Dhabi and Dubai are not neighbouring streets. The cities are about 130 kilometres and an hour and a half apart. Commuting between them daily is unrealistic, so the choice of school effectively decides the city you live in.

What to check before you sign

First, availability of places in the right year group for the right academic year — there are few Russian-curriculum schools, and waiting lists for popular classes are real. Then the document requirements: the student file, transcripts, medical certificates and legalisation of papers from the country you are leaving all take time. Only once enrolment is confirmed does it make sense to commit to a home — doing it the other way round regularly ends with a lease on the other side of the city.
